Radio Users
Many people use radio communications across many fields, businesses and departments in The UK. These users include businesses such as Taxis, Delivery Companies, Security Guards & Patrols, Hospitals, Airplanes & Airports, Sporting Events & Stadiums, Councils, Shops etc. along with other essential services such as Search & Rescue, Emergency Services, Military, Fire Fighters and Marine.

Most of these communications can be listened to on a simple radio scanner.

What is a Radio Scanner?
Unlike a normal broadcast radio that you would listen to in your car or home, a scanner is a wide band radio capable of picking up many transmissions and users such as those mentioned above. Each user will use a certain frequency or number of frequencies, and you can put these frequencies into a scanners memory channels and then scan them to listen to them.

For example, your local shopwatch security may be on frequency 453.6875 and your local council binmen on frequency 165.5875 (frequencies differ from area to area). You can put your local shopwatch frequency of 453.6875 into one channel and then put your local council binmen on frequency 165.5875 into another channel and select to scan them. The scanner will then scan between the channels entered and stop on a frequency/channel whenever they are talking allowing you to listen as they transmit.
